Wonderful Waterton

We have spent many vacation days in Waterton Lakes National Park.

Did you know Waterton Lakes is designated an International Peace Park due to the unguarded Canada/US border it shares with Glacier National Park, Montana?

From spending time with extended family there, to trips with just the two of us, Waterton is a go-to spot, given its’ close proximity to where home base is for us and family members.

Family reunions aren’t as common anymore for a variety of reasons, but the two of us continue to spend time there.

We stay at the “townsite” campground, which is a fully serviced, federally-run, campground. For the most part, it’s a great place to stay due to its’ convenient location as you can walk to everything in Waterton. One of the downsides is the lack of trees in the campground so there’s not a lot of shelter from the sun.

There are also campgrounds outside the park. (Note, a park pass is required to access Waterton).

On our 2017 trip, not only did we wander thru Waterton, we also went across to the US side and did a hike at Logan’s Pass, located at the top of Going-to-The-Sun-Road, Montana.

We were there in August 2017, just before the devastating Kenow fire of September, 2017.  During that fire, the visitor centre and other buildings were destroyed and the eco-system changed.

With fire comes rebirth and the eco-system rebounded.

Most recently,  the bison, which were relocated to Saskatchewan by Parks Canada staff ahead of the fire,  have now come back to the area. The return of bison means the grasslands have recovered enough to sustain them, and their handling facility has been rebuilt.

There’s no shortage of activities – hike Red Rock Canyon, or Bear’s Hump. Cameron Lake is a short drive away. Cameron Falls is right in Waterton.

Waterton can be quieter than Banff or Jasper but we like it that way.
